This Is Your Brain on GPS Navigation

New research published published in Nature Communications by our Director of Science Dr Hugo Spiers has revealed how regions of the human brain respond to network structure of city streets as people navigate the city using memory or Sat Nav / GPS. The team found that when people used their memory to navigate the streets the hippocampus was more active when the streets entered were highly connected and less active when the streets had few connections. This response was abolished when people could use a Sat Nav / GPS. 

This research makes it possible to make predictions about how the human brain would react in different city plans and buildings.
