Health & Healing in times of Planetary Dysregulation
What to Expect
The conversations and understanding of climate change are becoming increasingly centred around doom and inevitability, this can make us feel hopeless and scared. What if we turned this on its head? What if we created a new language to understand what is happening to our planet? What if felt deep love over doom?
Join Centric Lab to explore how understanding the climate crisis as planetary dysregulation can help us deepen our understanding of our intrinsic mind/body relation to the Land, and therefore our strategy around health justice.
We will be gathering for three days at House of Annetta to share our resources and toolkits, to reflect on the relationships between our health and the environments we inhabit, to explore how we can intentionally and strategically Kin to the Land, and to co-create community led disaster response kits to meet the times we are in.
Drop in on Wednesday 30th September, Thursday 1st October and Friday 2nd October 10-5pm to learn more and discuss health and place through themed conversation, bringing your questions, queries and experiences. Take part in our live workshop with the Centric Lab team on Thursday evening 6-8pm on community preparedness and disaster response kits.
❋ Ecological Health
We heal when the Land is healed and are sick when the Land is sick.
Health is a complex process involving not only the individual, but also their social interactions, other species and the external environment. It is based on a constant communication between Nature and the body, whereby we integrate in a specific ecosystem and both make use and give back to it. There is no liberation without Land justice
❋ Land Kinship
Our futures are in the imaginations of the Land
One of the most effective tools of colonisation and imperialism is the physical and epistemological severing of our Land relations. When we see ourselves as seprate to the Land, we can morally accept ecocide and genocide. Combining Ancestral/Indigenous practices and knowledges with new emancipatory scholarships that further our ability to listen and understand the imaginations of the Land is not only a pathway to healing, it is also the antidote to supremacy and oppression.
❋ Planetary Dysregulation
Extractive economies are removing the agency of the planet to heal.
We use planetary dysregulation to describe “the impaired ability of planetary systems to maintain and the processes required for self-regulation, particularly due to unsustainable exploitation of ecosystems and chronic exposure to industrial contamination”. This helps us understand our role, as Kin and as people, in its regulation. For example, abolishing the right to pollute Water, Air, and Land.
❋ Relational Lore
Before there is law, there is lore
Fighting for Land rights goes hand in hand with climate, environmental, and health justice, however, a rights paradigm is still within a supremacy framework. More importantly, it doesn’t allow us to understand our full relation to the Land, which is why it often fails us. This is due to law being rooted in supremacy lore, which will always aim to separate us from the Land. Lore is best understood as the accumulated knowledge through which communities make sense of the world and transmit that understanding across generations. We use lore to create various cultural outputs, including law. Therefore, if we are to achieve justice, we have to start using lore that is rooted in relationality to the Land. One key element to relational lore is collecting lived experience data that allows us to tell our stories of our relations to Land.
SCHEDULELet’s be Kin and Gather
We are gathering to make space for learning, conversation, and to make Kin. We will be there during the day offering an exhibition of work covering ecological health and planetary dysregulation, resources and toolkits to support the articulation of place and health, and a selection of our research archive on data and health justice.
Join us at any point during these three days to explore the work on display and chat with us about how it relates to your life and work. If you have a specific question or need support on your health and environment justice journey, we’ll be there to get deeper into it with you.
The display and materials will remain consistent throughout. Whilst the days are dedicated to the following themes, they will not be limited by them, so join us at any point to discuss what is listed below and beyond.
Visit the exhibition, chat with the team, and explore Emancipatory Imaginations and Scholarship Building
We will have books, resources, and booklets around non-sumpremacy imaginations to co-create new scholarships around Land and Health justice.
Wednesday 30th September
10:00 - 17:00
Visit the exhibition, chat with the team, and explore Food Sovereignty, Land-Kinship, and Land Knowledges
We will be using the work of Quechuan Evolutionary Biologist Dr Nataly Allasi Canales on Bitter Potatoes to ground us on conversations about Land imaginations, Ancestral knowledges, and our role in evolving them. We will also look at the work we have done with Dr Grace Carson, an Indigenous Land scholar and lawyer from Turtle Island to co-create relational lore to push our justice imaginations.
Thursday 1st October
10:00 - 17:00
Community Disaster Response Kit
This year has shown us that the dysregulation of our planet is creating extreme weather events that are putting our communities at risk. What does it mean to be responsive and adaptive in this context? What does preparedness look like for ourselves and our communities?
We will be discussing and co-creating community disaster response kits for El Nino, which will present heatwaves, drought, and fires. We’ll take this opportunity to make space for all our different imaginations around what it takes to prepare, withstand and heal in these times.
Thursday 1st October
18:00 - 20:00
Visit the exhibition, chat with the team, and explore Planetary Dysregulation and Contamination.
What is the link between planetary dysregulation and contamination? What does this mean in the context of data centres and our health and the health of planetary systems?
Drop by to talk strategies for neighbourhood scale planetary health, learn how to speak to your GP about health effects of air pollution, and how to collect data on neighbourhood health for yourself or community.
