MODULE 4

Case Studies

ADDING INSPIRATION

In 2024, Centric Lab ran a co-learning programme with organisers from 10 groups around the UK. Over the course of 6 month peers were introduced to various lessons about Ecological Health and conversations developed on how they related to creating a community health impact assessment.

A number of peers were then awarded Advocacy Grants to explore the work in, and with, their community. Here are some inspiring case studies of how people applied the work.

CREATING SPACE

It’s important at this stage to create some space to recognise that this body of work is in honour of, solidarity with, and learning from the Clean Air for Southall & Hayes community group. It was with this group from West London that this work emerged and we have consent to continue it. The group never got the justice they deserved but committed their time to creating a resource for others like them in the hope that people may not have to go through their situation again.

THEIR STORY

In 2018 the remediation of contaminated soil on a former gasworks site in Southall, West London led to toxic and harmful chemicals being emitted into the air and into the lungs of local residents. Despite their protestations and health impacts, the system said everything was fine. It was not. After a number of years working in solidarity we proposed to imagine what a better health impact assessment would look like, with the view that if it was in place at the beginning of the construction project would the same negative outcomes have occured.
